Weekly Wrap Up: October 1, 2022 #ARWX

For this week’s Fraggle video, here’s Wembley and Gobo!

Here’s this week’s Scripture passage!

I also want to take a moment to encourage everyone to pray for the victims of Hurricane Ian in Florida. I recently spoke to a friend of mine who lives there, and his home was destroyed in the storm surge, as well as millions of dollars worth of damage has occurred in Florida. Pray for the victims and for recovery efforts in Florida, as well as anyone affected by the hurricane when it came ashore in the Carolinas.

Finally, beginning this week, I will be featuring a link or two to a blog of a local writer in my area, Ashlyn Ohm, whose writings I’ve thoroughly enjoyed. You can follow her blog and podcast at Words from the Wilderness. She’s written two books, a weekly devotional A Year in the Woods, and her first novel, When the Ice Melts. I encourage you to pick up both of her works. They are excellent inspirational works.

This week, I’m going to provide a sampling of some of her older and recent posts from her blog for your enjoyment:

Finally, Sunday is September 11, so I want to take a moment to pause and remember this day in our history. May we never forget, and may we remember the brave first responders who served (and some gave their lives) during that tragic day.

New Arkansas Severe Weather Updates Blog Coming Soon!

I am happy to announce that I am launching a second weather blog on WeatherTogether.netArkansas Severe Weather Updates, coming soon!

This is a weather blog that will be available here. The blog is a companion blog to my main WeatherTogether blog. The differences between the two blogs is my main WeatherTogether blog hosts my weekly weather reports, whereas the companion blog will host shorter severe weather updates I’ll post during a severe weather event.

I setup this blog as a replacement for my posting severe weather updates on social media platforms after I left social media. Moving to posting severe weather updates on a blog have the following advantages to using social media:

  1. More Context: Whereas social media posts are limited in the amount of words one can post on social media, blog posts can include more words, content, and images, providing more context to severe weather updates.
  2. Less Noise: Since social media is used for other news and general discussions, severe weather updates have the ability to become lost in a sea of “noise”. Moving to a blog format eliminates the “noise” and allows readers to focus solely on severe weather updates.
  3. Targeted Audience: With the increase in “noise” on social media, the targeted audience who need to read the severe weather updates may not be able to easily view or read them. Moving to a blog format, complete with the ability to follow the blog via email or RSS, ensures the people who will most benefit from the severe weather updates will be able to view and read them.

The reason this blog has been setup to be separate from my main WeatherTogether blog (instead of merely using a “Severe Weather” category on my main blog) is to keep these posts separate from the main WeatherTogether.net need and not overfill the feed with multiple severe weather reports (I didn’t want all my severe weather updates “drowning out” everyone else’s weather reports!).

Coming soon, you’ll be able to follow the blog via email (or RSS if you have a feed reader) so you’ll be able to have severe weather updates from me served up directly to you (I just need to get the sidebar added).

I’m looking forward to using this new format for covering severe weather, and I’m excited about the opportunities that await!

That wraps it up here! Nathan Parker signing off.

Changes to How I Issue Weather Reports in the Future

As my readers know, I left major social media over a year ago. Since then I’ve tried out a few privacy-oriented social media and messaging platforms, even eliminating those down to a handful.

I’m announcing that I have completely left social media in all forms and will no longer be using it personally or for weather-related posts moving forward. I’ve realized that social media in general is a time waster and not a productive use of my time in general. Since I have recently begun my PhD dissertation, I need to focus on investing my time in areas that pay off, not wasting it on social media. I’ve also dramatically scaled back my overall news consumption to a single daily newsletter and a weekly podcast, since consuming massive amounts of news is also not a productive investment of my time.

I still plan to be involved in weather reporting since I love monitoring the weather and reporting weather events in my community. I may be slightly less active in severe weather reporting during weekdays for the next few months while I focus on my PhD dissertation, but I will still keep an active monitor on the weather situation around here.

My “Weekly Wrap Up” weather posts on here will not change. I still plan to release those every Saturday in the same format I’ve been releasing them. I’ll still append #ARWX to the end of the post so anyone who does share them on social media can benefit from the #ARWX tagging.

Short-term, any major severe weather updates that occur in my community, I’ll likely post here on my WeatherTogether blog, and I may simply move to this format moving forward. The blog format allows me to provide more context and thought to weather reports I post instead of smaller, less-contextual reports on social media.

For the times I need to provide “real-time” weather reports, I’ve considered setting up a chatroom on a messaging app such as Discord or Signal and invite those who wish to follow my “real-time” weather reports to access it. This way people who would actually benefit from the weather reports could read and access the reports instead of a mass-broadcast to social media that falls on a bunch of deaf ears. I haven’t decided if this would be a useful format to setup, or if I should simply post all severe weather related updates to this blog instead (and share the link to my blog to those interested). Feel free to offer comments, as I would love to hear feedback on this.

Lastly, now that I am a HAM radio operator (N5PKR), I’m trying to use my HAM radio for better use in my community for severe weather events. I’ve received some guidance from one of the major players in EmComm in my community, and I’ll continue to research other areas in this matter.

That wraps it up here! Nathan Parker signing off.
